ブックエンド作りました。 Bookend

結婚祝いのとして「bookend」を作ってほしい。
依頼人は結婚する友達のご親戚の方からで、秘密の依頼でした。

依頼人の方は、初めて結婚する二人を見たときに「Bookend」という言葉が浮かんだそうです。
二人一緒にいる姿が2人で一つ、対になるBookendを連想したとか。
そこで制作の相談を頂き、今回無事、作品が本人たちにわたり、喜んでいただけました。

Bookendというテーマ以外は自由だったため、私ならではのものを作りたいと思い、ブロンズで作る事を提案し、せっかくならオブジェとしても楽しめるような作品をと思い作りました。
普通に並べてオブジェとしても楽しめるし、背中合わせでbookendとしても使えます。その他男女を入れ替えて並べるとまた雰囲気が変わります。
解釈は様々ですが、たとえ二人が背中合わせでも、お互いの空気を感じる事が出来るような雰囲気を大事にして作りました。
本が象徴する二人の過去未来現在を含む歴史や知識をお互いが支えあう。
そんなコンセプトです。　伝わると良いのですが。

今回は一つ大きな初の試みがありました。。。
実は人物に髪をつけるのは初めてでした。
ボウズがほとんどで、他は水泳帽やウサギの被り物など、基本的に髪の毛がありません。
髪を付けない理由は様々なのですが、単純に言うと「感情の方向性が決まるから」です。髪の毛の長さや向き、髪型、などによって、感情が限定されてしまうのが嫌で。。。
作品を見る人が、それぞれの気持ちや感情で見てほしいというのが根本にありますが、何となくなので、それほど強い信念があるわけではないのです。

そして今回。私の作品ではあるけど、送り主は私ではありません。 できるだけご依頼主の意向や作品の趣旨に沿おうと思う中で、髪を付けることにしました。
男の子はリラックスした雰囲気を出したくて、たくさん寝癖を付け、その分女の子は真逆にしました。そんな事がとても楽しかったです。
今まで何となく「食わず嫌い」だったことが、逆に表現できることが増えることに気付きました。

ブロンズ像を作るのは久しぶりで、とても楽しく制作することができて、完成させるのが寂しいと思いながら作ってました。
完成してすぐに私の手元を離れてしまって、正直ちょっとさみしいです。

自画自賛ですが、、、　二人の姿を眺めてるととっても癒されたのです。
そんな思いが結婚した二人にも伝わると良いな。
今回、いろんなことに気付き、チャレンジできた作品でした。
今後のモノづくりにも活かします。

I made a pair of bookends, made in bronze, as a wedding gift.

It was a secret order from a family member of my special friend who receives the bookend.

The client told me that when she saw the couple for the first time, the word “bookend” popped out in her head. The couple looked like they are supporting and respecting each other like a pair of bookends.
That’s how the idea came from.

When I receive the order, I wanted to make something “I” can make.
So, I decided to make bronze sculpture but works as bookend as well.
You can enjoy as a sculpture by having them side by side. Or, you have them sit back-to back and stack books in between.
There are many ways to feel and interpret the works, but I would see them holding, back-to-back, the history and knowledge (from past, present, and future) created by them. The books can be the representation of such history and knowledge.
Also, I wanted to capture the caring feeling and atmosphere that they are feeling the existence of each other even they are apart and sitting back to back.

I enjoyed making them a lot since it had been a long time since I made bronze sculpture.
Also, making figurative works is always fun to do.

It was such a honorable work to do and I learned a lot from making them, which gave me motivation of making more works..

美容院の看板制作をさせていただきました。 sign for "ocho"

三軒茶屋にオープンした美容院「ocho（オチョ）様

の看板を作成させていただきました。

しっかりと、金属の良さが出た良い看板に仕上がったと思います。

今回、デザインのイメージを頂いていたので、それを基に立体及び金属になった時をイメージしながらデザインをしました。

オーナー様にも気に入っていただきました。

ochoはスペイン語で「８」を意味するそうです。オーナー様は８という数字にとても思い入れがあるそうで、オープンも昨日、8月1日からです。

三軒茶屋の茶沢通り沿いにあります！看板見かけたらぜひ立ち寄ってみてください。

Made a sign for the newly opened hair salon, “ocho”.

I came out really nice. I am happy with the way it looks which you can feel the massiveness of the metal, though it is not so heavy.

The owner liked how it turned out, as well.

“ocho” means 8 in spanish. The owner like the concept of 8 in many different ways, especially the octal number system. Because of that, the salon is opend on the 8^th month, August 1^st.

I am very happy that I could get involved in the start of the new story and I hope their success in the business J

Life with Metal…

久しぶりにモノづくりについて書きます。

依頼事はなぜか重なる事が多いのですが、現在同時期に依頼されていたものがいくつかありました。製作が終わったもの、途中のモノ、とりあえず構想はあるけど作業を開始していないもの。いろいろありますが、制作終了したものでもまだ納品が終わってないのでお見せできなかったり。

一つはもう少ししたらお見せできると思います。

現在制作しているものも依頼品ですが、彫刻のようなものを久しぶりにブロンズで作っています。

お題はいただいたのですが、それ以外は私のテイスト任せという事で、久しぶりに彫刻っぽい作品を作れてとても楽しいです。

以前からお願いしているアルティキャスト清水さんの所で鋳造していただき、先日ブロンズに変身した子たちに会いました。

やっぱり金属になると雰囲気がさらに良くなります。　自画自賛ですが、愛しくてたまりません。

早く完成させたいです。

依頼品なので、作ってすぐに私の手元を離れてしまいますが、それまでしっかりと愛情かけて作りたいと思います。

こちらも納品が済んで依頼者の許可を頂きましたらお披露目したいと思います。

Life with Metal

I am going to write about my recent works in order to show my respect to my own blog.. ha ha

Currently, I am working on a few different things and all of them are tailor made ones.  

One is a sign.  The making process is finished, but the order is not completed yet as I haven’t delivered it to a client. 

As soon as the order is completed (which is next week), I can show the work on my blog. 

Another one is also an order, and I am making a (kind of )bronze sculpture.  

It has been a long since I worked in bronze and also a figurative work, so I am very much excited about this project.

Though it has a function, I am free to make anything as long as it meets the requested function, so I decided to make something figurative. 

It’s already in bronze, casted at the bronze foundy, “Altecast, Bronze Casting Foundry”, where I usually work with.   As I see it in bronze, I just can wait to finish up and see it completed.  It makes me realize how much I love my work.. ha ha.

Now I am working on the piece to finish up.  I dont know how to say how much I enjoy it..

Since this is an order, I can enjoy it for limited time only. 

Until it leaves me, I am going to enjoy and treat it affectionately. 

I hope to put up some photos, but I should wait until September or late August at the eaerliest.

Menu board for Cafe Spile

阿佐ヶ谷の南側にある、6月にオープンしたカフェ、Spile(スパイル) http://cafespile.com/ さんの外置き様メニュー看板を作りました。

金属、アンティーク、ミニマル、というオーナーさんの好きなテイストを考え、シンプルな鉄に少しダメージ感を足して、古い雰囲気に。
シンプルだけど、存在感のある看板になりました。

カフェスパイルさんは10月号のOZマガジンにも掲載された、素敵なカフェです。スパイス好きのオーナーがこだわって作っているご飯メニュー、ドリンクメニューは本当に美味しいです。
お店の内装や家具もシンプルで落ち着きます。スパイスの量り売りもしています。
阿佐ヶ谷にいらした際はぜひお立ち寄りを(*^^*)

Made a menu board for a cafe, Spile.
Based on the owner' request, I made one very simple but has a presence, made of iron.
I put rust on the surface so that it gives an aged look.

Cafe Spile serves not only coffee drinks, they have speciality teas and food. As the name indicates, they make food and drinks using lots of different kinds of spices which gives quite unique and delicious flavor to what they make.
Must visit when in the neighbor.

cufflinks カフスボタン作りました。

カフスボタンを二つ。つくりました。
たまたまプレゼント用にカフスボタンを作ってくださいというオーダーをいただいたその日、また別の方からカフスボタンを作れるかの問い合わせ。コチラもギフト用とのこと。
何だろう。カフスボタンが流行っているのかしら？

そんな訳で。カフスボタン。

一つはプレゼントされる方の好きな映画をアイデアに。一つは既にあるデザインを元に作りました。

とある会社のロゴです。ステキなデザイン。company logo.  beautiful design.  enjoyed curving :) 

カフスボタンのイメージに合わせて木の箱も作りました。made a wooden box goes well with the design of the cufflinks.  

さて何の映画がモチーフでしょう？？左右でデザインの違うものをつくりました。 cufflinks comes in different designs.   what movie you think this idea came from?

先日双方ともお渡しも完了。
作った物を渡す時はいつも緊張します。
ありがたい事に、お二人ともとても気に入っていただけました。プレゼントされた方達もとっても喜んでいたそうで、本当に嬉しい。
カフスボタン作りは初めてだったけど、普段自分で作ると得意な事だけやってしまいがちなので、オーダーをいただけると新しい事にチャレンジ出来て嬉しい。
とても楽しいお仕事をいただきました。

Made 2 cufflinks ordered as gift.
On the day I was asked to make a cufflinks, I was asked another person to make cufflinks, too.   I never made one, so I wondered what this coincidence is.

Both cufflinks were special presents, one was a company logo so the design was provided, and the other one I was to come up with idea from the movie that the person who receives like.
Though it was a bit challenging, but I enjoy doing something new as I always get to learn new things.   Whenever I make something, I tend to do what I can do or I know I can do, so getting order is very fun and great experience.

When I show my works, I always get nervous if they would like them or not...  Thankfully, they loved my works so I was really happy.

I really enjoyed making both.

ハコモノ Recent works

最近ハコモノを作ってます。

以前からアクリルと真鍮のオブジェを組み合わせたハコは作ってたけど、どうにもハコがちゃんと作れない。

自分の不器用さ（集中力のなさも含め。。）に疲れ、手間だけがかかるので、しばらく遠ざかってたけど、どうしても作りたくて、なんとか、もう少し安価で手間のかからない方法を模索してみました。

そうしてできた最近のハコモノ。　
自分の力量でできるやり方で、自分なりに満足のいくものができました。

I just made 3 boxes recently.  They were made of acrylic with mini brass statues on top.
I have made these type of boxes long before, but I was struggling to find simple ways to make boxes as it was the hardest part cutting acrylic plates into exact sizes to fit each other...
So, I was a little away from making boxes, but I always wanted to make them again..
Now I started to figure out the simple way, so I don't have to get stressed out anymore.

The above are the ones I recently made.  Now I am making more of them.

ブロンズ像の作り方３ / Bronze Casting 3

前回のブロンズ像の作り方２では、ブロンズ。。。というか鋳物で出来る事という事で、ブロンズ鋳造の際、作りたい型を高温で蒸発（ロスト）させる事が出来れば、通常使用するロウ（ワックス）以外の素材（木や布など）で型を作る事が可能とお伝えしましたが、今回はその「型」を作るための「型枠」について書きたいと思います。
同じ彫刻でも、木彫りや石像などは、そのとき作る一品だけで、量産対象ではありません。それに対して、ブロンズ像など、主に型を用いて作るものは複製を作る事が可能です。その利点を生かして量産する作家の方もたくさんいらっしゃいます。
私の場合、型枠は主に石膏やシリコンなどで作るので、何度も使用すると劣化しますが、ある程度量産も可能です。
ですが、小さなアクセサリーや雑貨類は別として、私は彫刻などは同じ物を作るのは好きではないので、基本的に作った型枠を再利用して同じ物を作る事はあまりしません。
ですが、せっかく作ったので、同じ型枠から型を作って作る作品もたまにあります。

写真は同じ型を使って作った2作品です。

同じ型を使っても、仕上げや台座の付け方、ちょい足しとかで、違った雰囲気のモノができたり、新しい発見があったりして楽しいです。
ブロンズだから出来る事。型だから出来る事。そんな事を考えながら作るのも面白いです。

Last time, I wrote about the bronze casting focusing on the materials used for model.   You can use not only wax (though it is preferred) but also materials comes from nature, such as wood, paper, flower, and plant as long as it is burnable.
This time, I would like to talk about the possibility of using mold.

In bronze casting, different from stone/wood curving, it is possible to make exact "copies" of your work by using the same mold you make.    There are many artists who make copies of his/her work using this ability.
I usually make mold using either plaster or silicone, so it gets old and weak as time goes by, but it is possible to use the same mold unless it breaks.

I make copies of smaller works such as accessories using the same mold, but I do not like making copies of the same sculptures so I usually do not reuse the same mold to make the copy of the one I already have.
However, I use the same mold to create something different.
The pictures above are 2 bronze sculptures made out of the same mold.
You can create something new by applying the different finishing and/or adding something extra.  
I always enjoy coming up the ideas of what I can do utilizing the ability of "casting".    Its more interesting :D

ここ最近、作った物を全くアップしてなかった事に気づきました。。。まとめて紹介させていただきます。

housing project w/ cats ：照明プランターです。人バージョンはよく作りますが、今回は猫で。というご注文をいただき、作ったものです。猫作り、楽しかった。 Lighting & Planter with cats.  I usually make with people hanging.  This time I was asked to make with cats, and it was fun making cats.   

照明プランターの猫だけが欲しいとのリクエストを頂き。。。色んな所にぶら下がります。かわいいです。体長約3センチ。  I sell the cat individually as well.  It hangs everywhere.  so cute!   its about less than 2 inches. 

アクリルキーホルダー：同じデザインの指輪もありますが、これはキーホルダーです。この他１０種類ほどデザインがあります。 key chain : comes with 10 different designs.  

ペンダントヘッド：スプーン　真鍮　／　necklace : spoon  - brass 

まだ他にもアップできてないのがあると思いますので、順次アップします。

ブロンズ像の作り方２ / Bronze casting 2

  前回ブロンズ像の作り方について、ざっくり（もう、本当にざっくり）記載しました。今回はブロンズ像。。。というか、鋳物で出来る事について書こうと思います。


 ロストワックス製法では、①作ったロウ型（ワックス）を耐熱石膏で固め、②釜で石膏内のロウを蒸発（ロスト）させて、③そのロウが蒸発して無くなった所に溶解した金属を流し込む（鋳込む／いこむ）。　
 というのが大まかな工程になりますが、作りたい形が「蒸発する」（ロストする）というところがポイントの一つです。通常ロウを使って型を作りますが、高温で蒸発させる事が可能なモノであれば、鋳物として制作可能です。
 学生時代の友人が、よく本物のバラに湯道（金属の通り道）をつけて、石膏で固めて鋳込みをしていました。本物そのままのブロンズのバラが出来上がります。花びらが繊細過ぎるので、耐熱石膏で回りを固める時と鋳込みに高度な技術と慎重さが求められますが、可能です。その他、木片や麻など、自然素材で蒸発する物であれば鋳物にできるので、作成したロウ型と組み合わせたりする事で制作する可能性が広がります。

 私もこれまで木の枝、コーヒーマメの麻袋などを作品の一部として使用しました。色々出来て楽しいです。
 木とか自然素材だと、繊維が炭になったりして釜の中が汚れやすくなってしまったりするので、もしお試ししたい場合は、鋳造屋さんに事前に相談する事をお勧めします。

麻袋でドレスを作り、ロウ型の人物につけて一緒に鋳造。Dress was made of Coffee bean bag attached to the wax model, then casted into bronze. 

作品の一部。本物の枝をブロンズに鋳造しました。枝の表面の細かい模様まで再現されています。This is a casted bronze twig.  You can the detailed pattern of bark on the surface. 

  私は主にブロンズ鋳造をしていましたが、その他、金、銀、アルミニウム、真鍮、すず、鉄、どんな金属でも鋳造できます。それぞれ金属の特性があるので、出来る事が限られたりもしますが、鋳物で出来る事がたくさんあります。

  金の松ぼっくりとか作ったりしたら楽しいかもしれません。

  彫刻には木彫、石、彫塑など様々な表現方法がありますが、せっかくなので、鋳造だから出来る事。とか、素材や手法を考えてモノ作りをすると、可能性が広がって楽しいです。

   Today, I would like to share the possibilities of casting, following my last blog.  

   As I stated, the steps of bronze casting (for lost wax) are : 

   a.  make wax model then cover by silica sand mixed plaster 

   b.  burn out in the kiln over night to let the wax evaporated

   c.  pour the melted bronze into hole where the wax was evaporated

   For the lost wax casting, the model doesn't have to be wax though it is preferred.  you can cast "anything" as long as it is burnable and evaporates in the kiln. 

   A friend of mine in the college years used to make a "bronze rose" out of the real rose.   It takes patience and high skill as the petals are really fragile, but it's possible.   Anything burnable came from nature, like woods, hemp, grass, can be casted into metal, so it would be fun to mix them with wax model..  

   I myself used those natural materials, such as coffee bean bag and twig as part of my works.   It is fun to mix different materials as part of the model.    

   Here I wrote about bronze casting, but you can cast into any metals, like gold, silver, brass, iron, aluminum, lead...  Each metal has different characteristics, so some technique cannot be applied depending on the metal.  However, I love how much possibilities the casting has.  

  It would be fun to make a golden pine cone or something  :)  

  

  There are so many ways of expressing by "sculpture".  Some may express with wood, stone curving, Some may make cray figures...     With any materials and methods, I always like thinking of  "what can I do utilizing this particular methods?"   I like seeking the possibilities out of what I have already.     

ブロンズ像の作り方 / Bronze casting

Life with metal というタイトルなのに、なかなかモノ作りを題材にした日記が書けていないので。。。今日はブロンズ像の作り方をざっくりと、書こうかと思います。
ブロンズ像はいわゆる「鋳物」で、日本でも仏像だったり、美術品だけでなく、工業製品だったり（例えばマンホールのふたとか）、あらゆる所に鋳物製品を見る事が出来ます。
ブロンズ像は大昔から作られているので、時代とともに技法も様々に変化して来ました。
とは言っても、実は歴史とかあまり詳しい事は知らないので、ここでは、私の知っている「ロストワックス製法」について記します。
この製法の大まかな流れは、
①キャンドルとかの材料であるロウ（ワックス）で自分の好きな型を作り、
②その型を耐熱性のある石膏で固め、
③そのロウ型の入った石膏を釜に入れ、中のロウを蒸発（ロスト）させ、釜から出し、
④そこに高温で溶解した銅（ブロンズ）を流し込む。　
⑤石膏を壊して中からブロンズを取り出し、表面をきれいにして出来上がり。
というものです。シルバーとか、ゴールドとか、よくあるアクセサリーとかも素材と精密さが違うだけで作り方はほぼ同じです。
ロウで好きな形さえ作れば、後は型にはめて金属を流すだけなのですが、ロウ型を作る際、私はまず粘土で形を作り、そこから石膏型を取って、その型に溶かしたロウを流し込んでロウ型を作ります。作るものに寄ってはそうする事でロウ型を軽くし、使用するブロンズの量を調整したりできるし、同じモノをたくさん作る事ができるのですが．．まとまらなくなりそうなので、、あまり詳しくは書きません。


ブロンズを流した後、十分冷えてから耐熱石膏を砕くと中からロウで作った形と全く同じブロンズ像が出て来ます。このままでは湯道と呼ばれるブロンズの通り道など、邪魔な物がたくさん付いてるので、そういった余分な部分を取り、表面をきれいに仕上げて出来上がり。
最後の色づけは、一般的なのは、パティーナ（日本語が分からない。。）と言う技法で、色んな化学薬品を使って、金属との化学反応で色を出します。例えば、硫黄を使うと茶色〜黒に変色します。大昔の発掘された青銅の鐘とかありますが、多分、元々あの色ではなく、長年土中の化学物質にさらされた結果、あの色になったのだと思います。いわゆる金属の腐食です。


こんな感じで作られていきます。
同じ彫刻でも、木彫などに比べて工程が多いように思われるのですが、私はどの工程も面白いと思います。
以前も書いたけど、ブロンズ像というと敬遠されがちなのですが、結構たくさん出来る事があります。化学実験にも似てたりするし。もっと身近で安価になるといいなと思いつつ。


あまりまともな写真が無いけど、、、一応写真解説。

工程①すべてロウで出来てます。赤っぽい所が、本来作りたい所で、カップやその他のチューブみたいなのとかは、湯道と呼ばれるブロンズの通り道。この後、カップから下のチューブまですっぽり耐熱石膏で固めます。Wax piece with sprues.  will be covered by plaster mixed with silica sand.    

工程④すでに②も③も終わった状態。溶かした銅を流し込みます。Wax in the plaster has been evaporated over night.  Ready to pure melted bronze. 

工程④のあと。十分冷えた後に、耐熱石膏を割ると、中から①でロウの部分がすべてブロンズになった物が出て来ます。カップもブロンズになってます。 Breaking the plaster after cool-down.  You see all the sprues and cup are also casted into bronze.  

余分な部分を全部取り除いて、着色して出来上がり。 Finished piece after removing all sprues and cup and cleaning the surface.  

As the title of the blog indicates, I should be writing more about making something with metal... instead of writing too much about my garden and good fighters... So, I am writing about bronze casting this time.

Not only the art works, "casting" is very popular seen in the daily life, such as industrial works like lit for the manhole.
As for the bronze casting, there are different techniques used in different occasion time to time.  I, however, am not so familiar with the history of bronze casting, so I write about "lost-wax technique" here.

To make it simple, the steps are as below.
1.  Make any shape you like in wax
2.  Cover the wax piece by silica sand mixed plaster
3.  Put plaster into the kiln to evaporate the wax inside the plaster
4.  Set the plaster in the sand for safety and pure the melted bronze
5.  Break the plaster and take the bronze piece inside.  Clean the surface.  Finished.
It is almost the same method as making the silver accessories if you are familiar with it.
You can start with making wax piece first, but I often make cray piece first and make plaster mold out of it, then make the wax piece from the plaster mold.   This is to work on the details and make the bronze piece right and also for the other reasons..  but I won't go details here.

After removing all the bronze sprues and flashings from the surface, you will color your bronze piece with "patina" technique.   This is to color the surface by the chemical reaction of metal and chemicals.   Bronze changes into brown-black with liver of sulfer, for example.   You can change into various colors by using and mixing different chemicals and heat.

There are many steps and techniques involved in bronze casting, it seems, but I enjoy every step.
Hope bronze casting become more popular and cheap as it has lot of possibilities.

仕事 Being professional

先日、ふすまの引き手を作って欲しいという依頼を受けました。
やり始めたものの。。思ったよりも難しく、何度も作り方を変える事に。

そして、たくさんのアドバイスと手助けにより、本日ようやく完成、納品しました。
依頼者の方にはとても喜んでいただいたので、一安心。
この引き手は、日本のどこかの古いお寺のふすまに使われる予定です。今後お寺が続く限り残ります。とても嬉しいお仕事をいただきました。

完成したのは本当に嬉しいけれど、今回の制作にあたっては、自分の未熟さと浅はかさをいやというほど思い知りました。
自分の技量とモノを見る目。自分の感覚。そのすべてにおいてもっともっと磨かないと行けないと思ったお仕事でした。
反省しつつも、これからも自分のスキルをあげていける様頑張ります。
「仕事」とは。。。。ただ一言。きっちり仕上げる事です。今回の事をふまえて今後も前向いて進みます！

I got an order to make one of the handles for Japanese style door at the old temple somewhere in Japan.   It was a way harder to make than I imagined, so I had to change the making method many times.
I finally finished making it with lots of help, and I was happy to see when client was happy with it...
I feel honor that this handle will last as long as the temple last...

Though I am very happy to finish this, I really felt how unprofessional I was.
I really need to work hard and get more skill... If I knew myself (and/or my skill) a bit more, I could finish it a bit earlier without help from other people.

Being professional is hard but I should work hard so that I can be proud of my work.
This work made me think a lot, but I move forward.
