I just saw the movie, Himizu.
It was really great movie you have to see.
It is based on the best seller comic of the same title, which I got a big shock when I first read the comic book. It has been almost 10 years.
I have no word to describe the movie.
It is about 2 15 years old kids who just want to be "normal", but their circumstances wont let them have just a bit of normal life.
It hurts to see kids like that and how they feels, but it also has a strong hope at the end.
Anyway, watch the movie.

A friend of mine who used to be an excellent electrical engineer and helps me a lot for my electrical issues made a beautiful kaleidoscope. And it was exhibited at the store specialized in kaleidoscope, so i wen to visit the shop to see it.
I was looking forward to going to the store as it is located in one of the newly developed renovated area where many art shops and studios are.
There were many shops and studios which look interesting from outside already, so I was just excited to see each shops. There were many stores which is also a craft studio itself, so I got to talk to many artists then.
As I hopped around, I found the kaleidoscope store.
There are many interesting kaleidoscopes which is from traditional ones to the ones I have never seen before. My friend's work is also very unique in many ways. It is not what you imagine as kaleidoscope. He utilizes his knowledge and technique as an engineer and recycles many things to make art works. I always get impressed with his ideas and craftsmanship. Too bad I forgot to take pictures...
It was interesting to visit store specialized only in kaleidoscope and also the other shops.
I could not visit some of the stores, so I want to go back there and take more time to visit more shops.
Here are the website of the area : http://www.jrtk.jp/2k540/

A Happy New Year

2011年 / almost the end of the year
It's almost the end of the year... Time flies so fast, especially from the beginning of the December.
As I think about 2011, I had really good and meaningful year.
Last year, I have quit the job which I worked over 8 years. I was out of job until this summer, but focused on making art pieces at the studio. Though I had no income, I had really good time then as I would not have chance to focus that much if I had a job still.
At the very beginning of the year, the fortune said I had a excellent luck for the year. It was the best start of the year.
In February, I had a group show with the studio mates after moving to the new studio.
I had a first solo exhibition in May. Having the solo show, I had great experience.
So many people came to visit the show during 7 days. I had many encounters with wonderful people. I would not have the same experience if I had a regular job then.
I grew a lot of vegetables which I enjoyed eating throughout the spring and summer.
I started a new job about a few month ago. Though I don't have time to go to the studio than before, now I think about "what my priority is?" more than before. Which is good. Also, I enjoy looking at Mt. Fuji every morning from the office in the middle of Tokyo.
I go to the gym and work out a few days a week.
The earthquake in March, mom became sick, job hunting... There were some things which made me disappointed and depressed. These things, however, gave me chances to think about my mom, family, and myself a lot.
I have to admit that I am an optimist in many ways, but I think its OK because I can enjoy my life that way.
The most important thing is the fact that I am fine and happy.
Life is good.
I know that 2012 will be the good one as this year.

Mt. Fuji
The office I work at is located in the middle of downtown Tokyo but on the 37the floor. There are tall buildings around our building, but most of them are shorter than us.
One of my favorite things there is that I can see Mt. Fuji from the floor.
Since it is winter, the air is clear enough to see the beautiful mountain far faraway.
There are mountain range laying in front of Mt. Fuji, and snow-covered Mt. Fuji is just there standing much higher than those mountains.
So beautiful.
So divine.
Sometimes, I think about long time ago when no tall buildings are around and the only tall thing you see is Mt. Fuji from the Kanto Plain (Tokyo region). I would imagine that the Mt. Fuji was almost like a God for those people... I wish I lived in the era to see the mountain and have the feeling..
I think there are many people who feel the same way as I do toward Mt. Fuji, that you feel like pray for it. And when I feel that way, I always think that I AM really a Japanese. No one told me to pray for the mountain, but I do. I think it is from the basics of Shinto, which you do not learn but you gain as you grew up in Japan.
I feel happy that I work where I see Mt. Fuji everyday. Mt Fuji is definitely a lucky charm for me.

3 / Bronze Casting 3
Last time, I wrote about the bronze casting focusing on the materials used for model. You can use not only wax (though it is preferred) but also materials comes from nature, such as wood, paper, flower, and plant as long as it is burnable.
This time, I would like to talk about the possibility of using mold.
In bronze casting, different from stone/wood curving, it is possible to make exact "copies" of your work by using the same mold you make. There are many artists who make copies of his/her work using this ability.
I usually make mold using either plaster or silicone, so it gets old and weak as time goes by, but it is possible to use the same mold unless it breaks.
I make copies of smaller works such as accessories using the same mold, but I do not like making copies of the same sculptures so I usually do not reuse the same mold to make the copy of the one I already have.
However, I use the same mold to create something different.
The pictures above are 2 bronze sculptures made out of the same mold.
You can create something new by applying the different finishing and/or adding something extra.
I always enjoy coming up the ideas of what I can do utilizing the ability of "casting". Its more interesting :D
