９０年代後半、最高潮にかっこ良くて大好きなバンドだった。
その頃アメリカに住んでいて、どちらかというと洋楽が好きだったのだけど、たまたま日本に帰って来ていた時に、深夜番組で演奏していた彼らに釘付けに。
ボーカル/チバユウスケを始めみんなかっこ良いし、スタイル、音、歌詞、全部かっこいい。コアな音楽ファンはかなり異議有りだと思うけど、ギターの音がかっこいいと思ったのはこのバンドが初めてかも知れない。
部分的にかっこいいと思うバンドはいっぱい居るけど、久しぶりにどストレートに全部が「カッコイイ」と思えるバンドを見たと思った。
その後アメリカに戻り、回りの音楽好きな友達に、ニッポンにはものすごいかっこいいバンドが居るんだ！！と、ミッシェルがどれだけかっこいいか吹聴して回り、ミッシェルは私の回りだけ局部的に有名になった。
既に人気バンドだったし、私はアメリカに居たしで、ライブに行く事は全く考えてなかったけど、ある日友達から、「今日レイコの好きなバンドがポートランドでライブやるみたいだよ」と教えてくれた。ライブ情報の載ってるフリーペーパーをチェックしたら、住んでた町から２時間ぐらい離れた町にあるバーのスケジュールに彼らの名前があった。なぜアメリカ？なぜポートランド？しかもローカルバー．．半信半疑でバーに電話をして、真意を確かめると、本当に日本のミッシェルだった。
バイトを早めに切り上げ、急いで車を飛ばしバーに向かった。
そのバーは、週末にローカルのバンドが何組かライブをしている所で、結構かっこいいバンドが出るので、たまに見に行ってた所だったけど、表の看板にミッシェルの名前を見た時は本当に嬉しかった。
わんさか日本人が来てる事を想像してたけど、どうやら情報が全然なかったみたいで（今みたいにツイッターとかないし）、私と他数名の日本人が居るだけで、後は普通に週末音楽を楽しみに来た地元の人たちだけだった。
日本人も含め、まだ客もそれほど多くなかったので、ミシェルのメンバーと写真を撮ったり、話をする事が出来て、本当に感動した。
彼らの演奏が始まると、お酒を飲みながら適当に聞いていた客が、「おっ？」という感じで続々とステージに近づいていった。興奮して、回りの知らない人たちに、「日本で一番かっこいバンドなんだ」と大得意で言い回った。ミッシェル目当てじゃない人たちが彼らの音楽を聴いて、楽しんでるのを見るのは本当に嬉しかった。
他にも何組かローカルバンドが出て、みんなかっこ良くて、しかもミッシェルのメンバーとお話できたしで、本当に最高の一日だった。
多分アメリカに住んでた中で、唯一特権だと思った出来事だと思う。
久しぶりにライブの時の写真を見て、思わずスキャンしてデータ化してしまった。。。。
I happen to watch the PV of the legendary Japanese rock band, "Thee Michelle Gun Elephant". They were popular back in late 90's and they were the coolest Japanese band ever, at least for me.
I lived in the states during the time, so I was not really interested in Japanese music then. I, however, was glued on the TV screen when I saw them for the first time on TV when I was back in Japan for a few month. They were sooo cool. I thought it was a first time for me to see the straight up "Cool" band. I became a big fun of them since.
As I returned to the states, I told my friends who are into music about the coolest Japanese band how cool they are.
Since they were already super big in Japan and and I was in the states, I did not expect to see their show. One day, however, my friend called me up saying "I think your favorite band will play at the bar in Portland tonight." I did not really believe him first as I could not see any relation of them with the states, Portland, and the local bar (more like tavern..) . So I called the bar which is 2 hours away from where I lived, to find out if it was true or not. Then I found that it was true! I was so happy and excited. I rushed to the bar after work and so happy to see the sign at the bar saying " Thee Michelle Elephant Gun", though the order was wrong. The bar was one of my favorite bars in Portland as they have shows of cool local bands on the weekends.
The bar was filled with locals who just came to enjoy the music on the weekend.
Since there were not many Japanese people than expected, I got to talk to and take pictures with the band members!
As they start playing, the customers who were just hanging out at the bar start heading to where the band were playing, seeming they got attracted to the music.
I was soooo excited and could not help telling people around me how cool they are and they are the coolest band in Japan.
I was also excited to see the people who just happen to be there to enjoy weekend got attracted to their music and enjoy them.
What a privilege it was to see them that close! I believe it did not happen if I was in Japan.
