きのこの授業 mushroom hunting

秋と言えばキノコ。
キノコでいつも思い出すのは、大学時代に取っていた生物学のキノコのクラス。
ちゃんと単位ももらえる（しかも４単位）れっきとした生物学の授業の一つで、とにかくキノコについてだけまじめに勉強する授業。
キノコの生態から環境、種類、そして学名、キノコについてあらゆる事を勉強。そして週末には山や海にキノコ狩りに行くという。。　　


中でも、キノコ狩りは一番思い出深い。
みんなでバスで出かけていき、長靴を履き、方位磁石やかごを持って各自で山に入り、４、５時間後に合流というワイルドなモノで、最初は一人で山に入るのとか怖くて、あまり山道から離れないようにしていたけど、だんだん慣れて奥に進み、たくさんキノコを採取し、食べれる物は家に持ち帰って食べりした。
一番印象に残っているのは、学名をCatathelazma Ventricosum 、日本語でモミタケという食べれるキノコ。たぶん大モミタケいう種類だと思うけど、地表には傘だけ（直径１０センチ以上）しか出てなくて、掘り進めると長くて太い幹（？）が隠れてた。採り出してみると、大げさじゃなく全長３０センチ、太さ１０センチくらいの巨大キノコが表れた。嬉しいやらびっくりしたやらで、しばらく呆然としてた。
その後家に持ち帰り、他にも取れたキノコと一緒に調理して食べた。モミタケはシナチクみたいに弾力のある食感で、本当に美味しかった。量も多いし。写真無いので、興味のある方は是非モミタケで調べてください。
その他にも、カリフラワーみたいな大きなボール型をしたキノコとか、一般的に親しまれてるGolden Chanterelles(和名が分からない。。）とかたくさん見つけて、美味しく食べたりした。


大学時代は面白いと思う授業をたくさん取ったけど、このキノコのクラスはダントツで思い出深い。
でも実は、最後の期末試験で赤点を取ってしまい、単位を落としてしまった。
なぜならテストはクラスの机に並べられた１００個のキノコの学名（ラテン語）を当てるもので、私はそのうち３０％くらいしか分からず。。。　しかも名字と名前、両方（多分、〜目〜科みたいなの）当てないと○をもらえない。。私が今でも覚えてるのは、さっきのモミタケと、よく見かける赤に白い点々の毒キノコ（アマニータマスカリーナといいます）くらい。（Golden Chanterellesは一般名で学名ではない） 30%当てただけでも自分を褒めたい。


最後は、みんなで育てた舞茸を先生が調理してくれ、みんなで食べた。
授業は落としたけど、キノコについて勉強するなんてそうそうないし、本当に楽しい授業だった。


そうそう、日本のお役所のどこかに、「きのこ課長」という、キノコを専門に扱う部署の課長さんが居る。と、お友達が言っていた。
なんだか楽しい。


its a season of mushroom.
The mushroom always remind me of the class I was taking in college.
I took "mushroom class" which is one of the biology classes for 4 credits.  Its a serious class you learn everything about mushroom.
During the class, we studied many things about shrooms, such as wild life, species, natural conditions.. so on.   Then, we used to go on the field trips on the weekend for mushroom hunting.  
That was my favorite of the class.
We go to the mountains and oceans by bus, then we go into the wild individually to hunt, then meet up again in 5, 6 hours later.
It was scary at the beginning as I was afraid of being lost in the mountain, but as I got used to it, it was getting so much fun to find mushrooms here and there.
One of my best mushrooms I found is Catathelazma Ventricoza, a giant mushroom looks like White Matsutake but a lot bigger.   I saw only the mushroom cap on the ground which was more than 3,4 inches, then I started digging and found really long and fat stem buried in the ground.   For real, it was more than 10 inches long.  
It's a edible mushroom, so I took it home and fixed with other mushrooms I found.  It was really fatty and tasty :)
Throughout the classes, I enjoyed many different kinds of mushrooms.

Though I had such a fun time in the class, I failed the final exam and could not pass the class.
The final exam was to identify "scientific names" of the 100 kinds of mushrooms lined on the class table.   I could identify only 30 to 40 of them, so I failed.    The only names I still remember are Catathelazma Ventricoza and Amanita Mascarina.. Thats it.

On the last day of the class, our instructor cooked the mushroom we grew and we all ate together.  It was really good.

Though I failed the class, I had such a fun time learning about the mushrooms.
