ブロンズ彫刻工房アルテキャスト訪問 / Visiting bronze casting foundry

先日、葛飾区は亀有にある、美術鋳造所のブロンズ彫刻工房／アルテキャスト（http://arte-cast.cocolog-nifty.com/blog/cat20332077/index.html）を訪問させていただいた。

亀有と言えば「こち亀」。はじめて降り立った亀有駅のロータリーには、両津勘吉の立像が。「素材はブロンズかなあ。。。」なんて思ったりしながら、工房を目指す。

工房では、代表の清水さんともう一人のスタッフの方がいらして、工房全体はそれぞれの工程に合わせていくつかの部屋に分かれていた。

工房を見学させていただいて、感動したのは制作工程や道具、手法などが、私が大学で習った方法とほとんど一緒だったこと。ワックスや石膏型、何を見ても懐かしくて安心して、感動した。

一通り見学させていただいた後は、鋳造についてや、工房のお仕事などについて、色々と興味深い話しをさせていただいた。これからのモノ作りの可能性を広げられると思うととてもワクワクする。

アルテキャストの事は、もともとブロンズ鋳造所を探している時に、ネットで会社案内を見た事。数ある美術鋳造所の中でなぜ清水さんの工房に惹かれたのかと言うと、工房案内から、「ブロンズ像をもっと身近なモノにしたい。」という感じを受けたから。

日頃私も同じような気持ちで居たので、是非工房の見学とお話を伺いたいと思い、すぐに連絡をさせていただき、今回の工房訪問が実現した。

美術品の中でも、ブロンズ像というと「特別なもの」「敷居の高いもの」「高価な美術品」というイメージが、特に日本では多い気がする。実際には木や石、その他色々な素材で作るものと価値は変らないのに、なぜかブロンズ像は特別視されている気がしてならない。そしてそのイメージを促進するかのように、美術鋳造はやたらと高額に設定されている（気がする）。だからどうしても高価になってしまう。

今は、ブロンズ像にこだわらず、真鍮や銅板などを利用してものを作っているけど、やはりブロンズ鋳造も取り入れたもの作りをしたいという気持ちが強くある。ブロンズ像を身近に感じてもらえるようなものが作りたい。そのためにも、「すべておまかせ」の鋳造でなく、少しでも自分で行う事でコストを抑えたい。
今回清水さんの工房を訪れた事で、この気持ちが強まるとともに、現実的に可能性が広がるのが感じられる気がした。 またブロンズ鋳造に携われる事、これから出来る事がたくさんありそうで、楽しみでワクワクする。

I have visited bronze casting foundry, ArteCast, in Kameari, Tokyo. 
It was my first time to visit the casting foundry in Japan, so I was very very excited.  

The foundry is run by the owner, Mr. Shimizu.  Usually he works alone, but another staff member was there working on the cray model when I visited.   The studio was divided into 3 section, modeling area, foundry area, and finishing area.   Here and there, I saw many familiar tools and equipments laying around everywhere in the studio.  Also, I was happy that their casting method was almost the same as the method I learned in the college.   
After toured around the studio, I had fun talking to Mr. Shimizu.  We talked many things about bronze casting and its future possibilities. 
 
One of the biggest reasons visited this particular foundry is because I had an impression that we share the same thoughts about bronze casting, which is to make bronze as something more close to people.  
I always had this impression that people (especially in Japan) may think that bronze (statue) is something "special", "unfamiliar", "super expensive", and etc, etc...  In fact, with no particular reason, it can be very expensive to ask for bronze casting at the commercial foundries in Japan.   Compared to the United states, I think it is unreasonably expensive.  And that is one of the reasons that bronze sculpture is very expensive.  
At the ArteCast, Mr Shimizu wants bronze to be familiar to many people, he tries to suppress the cost by negotiating with the artists who want to cast.  By helping some stages, I can hold down the cost he says.  This offer is very helpful for me as I can do most of the stages.   
I like using other metal materials, such as brass, copper, and silver, but I always wanted to mix with bronze casting, too.. I want people to think bronze is familiar material and not so special.  
By visiting ArteCast, I felt that I can believe in the future possibilities for my life with metal and bronze. 
It was really wonderful and meaningful visit.  I am very much excited now :)
